piece-dye
To dye (a finished fabric) after it has been woven or knitted, but before it is cut and sewn into finished products like garments.
Why this one
Piece-dyeing lets a mill hold greige goods and commit to colour late, when orders are firm. The trade-off is uniformity: blends of different fibres take the bath unevenly, and shading side to centre or end to end shows up on the cutting table, not in the dyehouse.
In use
We'll piece-dye that lot once the buyer settles on a shade, no point committing 4,000 metres of greige to navy now.
