Airspace: from sky to wall cavity
Everyone knows airspace as the sky itself. Construction trades call it something much smaller: a deliberate pocket of trapped air.
In common speech, airspace means the atmosphere above a place, the sky available for aircraft or weather. It is the open expanse. But in construction, airspace has a specific, confined meaning: the air-filled gap intentionally created inside a cavity wall between two layers of masonry or between masonry and insulation.
A cavity wall consists of an outer brick or stone leaf, an inner leaf of concrete block or brick, and a gap between them. This gap is the airspace. It serves to break the path of water and cold from outside to inside. Wind-driven rain hits the outer leaf and runs down; the airspace stops it crossing to the inner leaf. Similarly, heat does not travel easily through still air, so the airspace provides thermal resistance. The depth of the airspace, usually 50 to 150 millimeters, is set by building code and design. Too narrow and it loses its effectiveness; too wide and it wastes materials and space.
The airspace can be left empty or partially filled with insulation material such as mineral wool, foam, or beads. When empty, the air itself is the insulator. When partly filled, the remaining airspace continues to work alongside the solid material. The distinction matters: a "partially filled cavity" preserves airspace around or behind the insulation, whereas a "fully filled cavity" removes it entirely.
The word travels into civil engineering and roofing, where similar principles apply. A ventilated air gap between a roof deck and roof covering, or between concrete and cladding, is also called airspace. The word has slipped from the sky down into the wall because the physics is the same: trapped or moving air resists the flow of heat and moisture. The language follows the logic of insulation.
