Misclose: when a survey line refuses to close
In everyday speech, a close is an ending. In surveying, it means something much stricter: the starting point and endpoint must be identical.
To close a loop means to return to where you began. In conversation, you might close a discussion or close a door. The word suggests finality, completion, shutting something down. In surveying, a close is equally final, but far more exacting. A surveyor measures the boundary of a parcel of land by taking bearings and distances from point to point. If the work is correct, the chain of measurements will return precisely to the starting point, forming a closed polygon. The endpoint and starting point must coincide exactly. Anything less is a failure.
A misclose is that failure. The surveyor walks or drives the perimeter, recording the bearing and distance of each side. These measurements are plotted to reconstruct the boundary as a closed shape. But if the measurements contain errors, the final point will not return to the first point. The gap between them is the misclose, or sometimes called the error of closure. It is expressed as a distance, often in feet or metres. In high-precision work, a misclose of even one foot may be unacceptable and trigger a resurvey.
The cause is always error in the field measurements themselves. A bearing taken at the wrong angle, a chain stretched or slack, a distance mismeasured by careless pacing, accumulated compass drift as the surveyor works downhill or crosses magnetic rock. No single mistake needs to be large. Ten small errors distributed around the loop can sum to a significant misclose. The surveyor must identify which measurements are suspect and return to remeasure them, or adjust the entire chain mathematically to distribute the error proportionally across all sides, a technique called balancing.
The term misclose is particular to boundary surveying. In other fields, surveyors measure linear features such as roads or pipelines that have a clear start and finish; closure is irrelevant to them. But a property boundary forms a closed figure by definition. It must enclose a definite area. This legal and geometric requirement is why closure is not optional in land surveying and why a misclose is always a problem to be solved, not a detail to be overlooked.
