Bricking: From Walls to Failed Firmware
A masonry term for permanent structural damage becomes the term for a device rendered permanently inert by software failure.
To most people, bricking means laying bricks to build or repair a wall. A bricklayer mortars bricks into courses, creating the load-bearing or decorative skin of a building. Once a brick is in place, it stays there; removing it means dismantling the wall.
In energy and utilities, bricking describes what happens when a device becomes completely inert and unusable due to a failed firmware update or corrupted software. A firmware flash gone wrong, an interrupted upload, or malicious code can leave a controller, inverter, or meter in a state where it no longer boots, responds, or functions in any recoverable way. The device is as immobile and purposeless as a brick pulled from a wall: solid but useless.
The term has spread across consumer electronics and IT more broadly. A smartphone or router can be bricked by a bad update, a failed jailbreak attempt, or water damage that corrupts its flash memory. The device becomes a brick: physically intact but electronically dead, often without any recovery path short of replacing hardware components or firmware chips.
The metaphor travels directly from masonry. Just as a brick, once set, is locked in place and resists change, a bricked device is stuck in a permanent, immutable state. The transition happens because both situations represent finality: the wall cannot be easily unmade, and the device cannot be easily repaired. In energy systems, where firmware controls critical functions like voltage regulation and grid synchronization, the stakes are higher. A bricked substation controller or SCADA device can disrupt service across a region.
The term became common in the energy sector as distributed generation and smart grid technology introduced remotely manageable devices with updateable firmware. A botched OTA (over-the-air) update to thousands of inverters across a utility's network could brick them all at once, creating an emergency. The word captures both the humor and the horror of that possibility: your cutting-edge device has become worthless rubble.
