Cobot: The Robot That Doesn't Work Alone

Outside the factory, a robot is a machine that works on its own. On the shop floor, a cobot is engineered to share space with people.

To most people, a robot is an independent machine that performs tasks without human help. Science fiction has trained us to imagine robots as replacements for workers, operating in cordoned-off zones or vacant factories. A cobot, short for collaborative robot, inverts this picture. It is built from the ground up to work beside human operators in the same workspace, passing parts to them, receiving instructions, and responding to their proximity.

In robotics, a cobot is defined by its design constraints and safety features. Unlike traditional industrial robots, which can exert enormous force and move at high speed, a cobot has restricted power and speed, force-limiting joints, and sensors that detect human touch or nearby movement. If a worker's hand enters the cobot's work envelope, the robot detects it and stops or slows. Torque limits prevent the robot from crushing or catching a person. The cobot's payload is modest, usually under 10 kilograms, and its reach is short. These limitations make it safer to operate without the expensive guarding, interlocks, and isolation that traditional industrial arms require.

The metaphor is literal: the cobot works alongside rather than instead of. A human might load parts onto a conveyor while a cobot grips and positions them for welding. Another operator might guide the cobot's arm to learn a new task through demonstration, then watch it repeat the motion. The cobot augments human capability rather than replacing it. This partnership makes cobots valuable in small and medium-sized factories, where production volumes do not justify the cost of a fully automated line, and in tasks that demand human judgment, dexterity, or adaptation.

The term and the technology emerged in the early 2000s, driven by advances in force sensing and control software. Companies like Universal Robots and KUKA developed platforms that made collaborative work practical. The appeal was twofold: cobots lowered the barrier to automation for smaller manufacturers, and they promised to reduce workplace injury by handling heavy or repetitive tasks while keeping humans in the loop. Today, cobots are common in assembly, machine tending, palletizing, and quality inspection.
