Crimp: from hairstyle to electrical fastening
In everyday speech, a crimp is a wave or curl; in electrical work, it is a permanent mechanical joint formed by compressing metal.
To most people, a crimp is a slight wave or curl in hair, fabric or paper. The word comes from the Middle Dutch crimpen, meaning to shrivel or compress. That everyday sense still dominates: you crimp your hair with heated tongs, or crimp pastry edges with a fork to seal them.
In electrical engineering, crimping is the process of fastening a wire to a connector terminal by deforming metal. A crimping tool compresses the connector (usually made of copper or tinned copper) around the insulated or bare wire until the two parts are squeezed into a solid, electrically conductive joint. The tool typically has a calibrated handle and interchangeable dies that match specific wire gauges and terminal sizes. Once crimped, the connection cannot be easily undone without damaging the terminal or wire.
The connection is stronger and more reliable than twisting wires together or soldering, especially in applications where vibration, temperature cycling or moisture is a concern. Crimped joints on automotive wiring harnesses, power distribution panels and telecommunications cables must meet standards such as ANSI/UL or IEC specifications. The crimp depth, squeeze force and resulting contact resistance are all measurable and must fall within tight tolerances.
Plumbing and HVAC trades also crimp, but differently. They use copper or aluminum ferrules and hose clamps to join metal tubing and hoses; the mechanism is compression rather than the deforming-terminal-around-wire method of electrical crimping. In both trades, the shared idea is that you press metal inward until it grips and bonds the parts, rather than using solder or mechanical fasteners.
Why did the word transfer from hair to metal? The physical action is the same: you apply localized pressure that creates a permanent change in shape. A crimping tool does to a connector what heated tongs do to hair, except the result is irreversible and holds fast under electrical and mechanical load. The metaphor made the technical term memorable and easy to teach.
