Fired: from burning to becoming

To most people, fired means burned up in flames. In ceramics, it means heated under strict control to lock in strength.

In everyday speech, fired describes something that has caught fire, caught light, burned away. The word carries a sense of destruction, loss of control, sudden heat and damage. A fired building is a wreck. Fired wood becomes ash.

In industrial ceramics, fired means something almost opposite: a clay body or glaze has been placed in a kiln and heated to a precise temperature, held there for a set time, then cooled in a controlled way. The heat triggers chemical changes in the clay minerals, fusing them together into a hard, non-porous solid. Firing transforms raw clay into ceramic ware. A fired pot cannot return to mud. The transformation is permanent and intentional, nothing like combustion.

The kiln temperature must match the clay body and glaze. Earthenware fires at cone 04 to 06 (roughly 1000 to 1050 degrees Celsius). Stoneware fires at cone 6 to 10 (1220 to 1300 degrees Celsius). Porcelain requires cone 10 or higher, sometimes 13 (over 1400 degrees Celsius). Too low and the clay stays weak and porous. Too high and the glaze melts into a puddle, or the clay body warps and bloats.

Both senses grew from the root idea of heat applied to a material. But everyday firing is accidental or violent, while ceramic firing is the whole point: heat is the tool that makes clay permanent. In mining, the related term firedamp refers to methane gas, named for the danger of explosion when a naked flame encounters it in a shaft; miners feared the flame, not the heating process. The ceramic meaning is one where the flame, contained and measured, is the craft itself.
