Floor: walking surface vs. ore body
In mining, the floor is not where you stand, it is the bedrock that holds the ore above it.
To most people, a floor is solid and horizontal: the surface you walk on, the bottom of a room, the deck of a ship. It is where things rest and where people move. In everyday speech, "the floor" is almost always the finished or visible layer, the interface between you and what lies below.
In mining and extraction, the floor is the opposite. It is the rock stratum that sits beneath an ore body or mineral deposit. The floor provides the geological foundation. Where miners care about what lies above the floor (the ore seam, the coal layer, the vein), the floor itself is the host rock, the wall of stone that marks the lower boundary of the deposit. A miner standing in a drift or stope is literally above the floor, looking at it from above, even though in ordinary language we think of floors as what we stand on.
This inversion reflects the miner's perspective underground. From the surface, you look down. From inside the mine, you look up at the roof or ceiling and down at the floor. The floor is the solid boundary below; the roof is the boundary above. In stratified deposits, especially coal and ore bodies laid down in horizontal layers, the floor is the lower contact, the precise geological plane where economically valuable material ends and worthless or less valuable rock begins. Knowing the exact composition and stability of the floor matters for safety and for extraction economics.
The same vertical perspective appears in construction, where a subfloor is a structural layer that sits beneath the finished walking surface and transmits its weight downward. In threshing, the threshing floor is a flat surface on which grain is laid to be beaten. In automotive, four-on-the-floor and floor it reference the floor of the vehicle cabin as the location of controls. In circuit design, floorplanning maps the placement of functional blocks in space, as though designing a layout you could walk through. All of these keep the original sense: floor as the surface or layer you interact with or look at from above, the horizontal reference plane in a given context. Mining alone flips the perspective, because miners work inside the deposit looking outward, and what matters most is the bedrock boundary they cannot take.
