Gland: From body part to shaft seal
In medicine, a gland secretes. In mechanical engineering, a gland seals: a packed cylinder that grips a rotating shaft to stop fluid leaking out.
To most people, a gland is a biological structure: the thyroid, the salivary gland, the sweat gland. It produces or releases a substance into the body. The word comes from Latin glandula, meaning acorn, from the shape of certain glands in the neck.
In mechanical engineering, a gland is something entirely different: a compressible cylindrical case fitted tightly around a rotating or reciprocating shaft where that shaft penetrates a pressure boundary, such as a pipe wall or pump casing. The gland's job is to stop fluid (water, oil, coolant) from leaking out along the shaft. Inside the gland sits packing material, usually made of braided fibers like cotton, graphite, asbestos, or modern synthetics. As the gland is tightened via a compression nut, it squeezes this packing against the shaft, creating a seal.
The gland is one of the oldest sealing technologies in mechanical systems. Propeller shafts passing through the hull of a ship must be sealed with a gland packing to prevent the sea from entering the vessel. Pump shafts, mixer shafts, agitator shafts, and the stems of valves and faucets all use glands. The packing material gradually wears as the shaft rotates under it, so the gland nut can be tightened over time to restore the seal, or the packing can be replaced without dismantling the equipment.
Why did mechanical engineers borrow the anatomical term? The answer lies in shape and function metaphor. Early machine makers noticed that the cylindrical case surrounding a shaft resembled the bulbous form of certain body glands, and the name stuck. Once established, it never changed, even as the comparison faded from everyday use. Today, the term is pure nomenclature: a gland seal has nothing to do with secretion, only with containment.
