Jiffy: a casual moment or a precise electrical tick
To everyone else, a jiffy is an indefinite instant. To power engineers, it is the exact duration of a single AC cycle.
In everyday speech, a jiffy is a vague unit of impatience. "I'll be there in a jiffy" means soon, more or less. The word has no formal definition outside colloquial use and carries no precision whatsoever. It belongs to the same family as "in a moment" or "in a sec", expressions of speed rather than measurements of time.
In energy systems and electrical engineering, a jiffy is rigorously defined as the period of one complete cycle of alternating current. In North America, where standard AC frequency is 60 hertz, a jiffy equals 1/60 of a second, or approximately 16.67 milliseconds. In countries using 50 hertz AC, a jiffy is 1/50 of a second, or 20 milliseconds. This distinction matters: power engineers must specify which jiffy they mean when discussing relay timing, harmonic analysis, or fault detection.
The term appears most often in discussions of power quality and protective relaying. Engineers might specify that a circuit breaker must respond within five jiffies to clear a fault before voltage collapse cascades through the grid. At 60 hertz, five jiffies is roughly 83 milliseconds, a critical window in preventing blackouts. The jiffy gives engineers a dimensionless way to speak about electrical events that are too fast for human perception but slow enough to matter for grid stability.
The jiffy entered electrical vocabulary because it provided a convenient linguistic bridge between the abstract world of frequency and the practical world of milliseconds. Rather than constantly convert between hertz and seconds, engineers borrowed a colloquial term and gave it exact meaning. The word's vagueness in common English made it safe to repurpose: no official body owned it, and no precision was being lost by the adoption, since no precision existed in the first place.
Computing also adopted the jiffy, but in a different form. In some operating systems and physics simulations, a jiffy is the duration of the smallest addressable time unit, often tied to the system clock tick. This differs from the electrical definition and has no fixed duration across platforms, making it another case where a casual word acquired technical meaning through borrowing rather than invention.
