Panel: from wall to pit section
A panel is a flat piece of material to most people, but in mining it is a whole district of the pit floor.
To most people, a panel is a flat sheet of something: a piece of plywood, a section of wallboard, a metal or plastic skin attached to a frame. It covers a surface or forms one side of a box or cabinet. The word traveled from Old French, where it meant a piece of cloth or a garment panel, and came to mean any distinct rectangular or polygonal section within a larger whole.
In coal mining, a panel is something far larger and more structural. It is a vertical section or district of the mine, bounded on its sides by pillars of coal left standing to support the roof above. A mine is divided into panels as a matter of mining layout and extraction strategy. The coal seam within the panel is then worked by longwall or other means, the coal extracted in stages or in a single pass, while the pillars stand to prevent collapse. The panel is a unit of production and of pit safety at once, a area large enough to be worked with economy but small enough to be managed and buttressed.
The divergence between the everyday and industrial senses is one of scale and load. A building panel carries aesthetics or weather; a mining panel carries the weight of rock and earth above it. Both are rectangular sections cut from a larger mass. Both mark boundaries and divisions. But a mining panel is not merely a facing or a partition; it is a structural reserve, a district defined and held by what is left behind rather than what is taken away.
In architecture and construction, panels such as standing seam roof panels are indeed thin sheets of metal that shed water and require support underneath. Here the panel is the product itself, deployed as a finished skin. In mining, the panel is the negative space: the open working ground between two walls of coal or stone that are too valuable or too necessary to extract. The coal pillar is the panel's real body; the open space is what the miner works within.
