Phase: A wire, not a stage

To most people, a phase is a stage or period. To an electrician, it is one live conductor in a multi-wire power system.

In everyday language, a phase is a stage in a process or a distinct period in time. The moon has phases. A project moves through phases. A person might be going through a difficult phase. The word comes from the Greek phasis, meaning appearance or presentation, and it has stayed true to that sense for centuries.

In electrical engineering, phase means something far more specific and concrete. A phase is one of the power-carrying conductors in a system that distributes alternating current through multiple wires. In a three-phase system, which is standard in industrial power distribution, there are three separate live conductors, each carrying current that alternates in the same frequency but at different times. Each conductor is called a phase. The currents are offset from one another by 120 degrees; that offset is the phase angle. A single-phase system, common in homes, has just one live conductor plus a neutral. Split-phase power, used in residential and small commercial settings, splits the output of a transformer between two line wires.

The electrical meaning does carry an echo of the original one. The three conductors in a three-phase system do reach their peak voltages at different moments in time, in sequence. In that sense, they are at different phases of the same cycle. But the industrial meaning has narrowed sharply: phase is no longer a temporal concept, but a physical one. It names a wire, a conductor, a path for current flow. You do not wait for the next phase; you connect to the second phase.

The term interphase, used in materials science, shows how the word has spread into other technical domains. An interphase is the transitional zone between two materials in a composite, a region where properties shift gradually from one substance to the other. Here, phase returns closer to its original sense of appearance or boundary, but the word now refers to the material itself, not a stage in time.

Phase angle and phase-locked loop are further refinements within electrical and electronic engineering. Phase angle is the angular measure of the offset between two sinusoidal waves, expressed in degrees or radians. A phase-locked loop is a circuit that forces an oscillator to lock onto an incoming signal by adjusting its own phase continuously. In both cases, the word phase still names a property of oscillation, but the focus is on synchronization and vector mathematics rather than on which wire carries which current.
