Pretension: Stress Before the Pour
In everyday speech, pretension means false claims or airs; in construction, it means deliberately stretching steel before concrete hardens around it.
To most people, pretension is an affectation, a claim to importance or sophistication that is not genuine. You pretend to something you do not actually possess. But in structural concrete work, pretension is the opposite of false: it is a deliberate, measured, and essential mechanical technique.
In construction, pretension means applying tension to reinforcing steel strands before the concrete is poured. The steel is stretched under load and held in that state. When wet concrete is then cast around these tensioned strands, it bonds to them as it cures. Once the concrete hardens fully, the tension in the strands is released. The strands try to return to their original length, but the concrete now holds them, creating a permanent compressive force throughout the beam or slab. This compression counteracts the tensile stresses that will develop when the structure is loaded in service.
Posttension, by contrast, is the inverse process. In posttensioning, strands are left slack as concrete is poured. After the concrete sets, the strands are pulled tight and anchored at the ends, applying compression to the hardened concrete from within. Both methods achieve similar structural benefits, but they demand entirely different staging and equipment.
The terminology reflects the engineering reality. Pretension acts on the steel before the concrete is alive; posttension acts after the concrete is dead in the structural sense. The word pretension borrows its prefix from the temporal sequence, just as pretest means testing before use and preset means adjusting before operation. The divergence in meaning between the everyday and the structural senses is complete: in one, pretension is dishonest; in the other, it is load capacity made physical.
