Retarder: the brake that isn't a brake
In everyday speech, a retarder is anything that slows progress. On the road, it's a specialized mechanical device that does the job without wearing out your friction brakes.
To most people, a retarder is simply something that delays or hinders. A traffic jam retards your journey. Rain retards plant growth. The word sits comfortably in general English as a synonym for obstacle or impediment.
In mechanical engineering, a retarder is a specific piece of hardware mounted on heavy vehicles: trucks, buses, and railway wagons. It uses electromagnetic or hydrodynamic resistance to slow the vehicle during prolonged descent or braking, without relying on the friction brake pads and discs. The most common type, the electromagnetic retarder, works by passing the driveshaft through a magnetic field; the resistance generated converts kinetic energy into heat that dissipates through the vehicle's cooling system. A hydrodynamic retarder operates on similar principles but uses oil circulating through chambers rather than electromagnets.
The retarder solves a real problem in heavy transport. Friction brakes on a fully loaded truck descending a long mountain pass will overheat and fade, losing stopping power at the worst moment. A retarder handles continuous braking duty without fatigue, working in parallel with the service brakes to keep them within safe operating temperature. Drivers engage the retarder through a dashboard control and can modulate its braking force.
The terminology diverged because the device does literally retard, or slow, the vehicle's motion. Unlike a brake, which works through friction, the retarder operates through resistance and energy dissipation. The word was borrowed from general English but became a term of art because the mechanism and its purpose in heavy vehicle design were distinct enough to need a precise name.
