Shaft: From loom bar to spinning axle

In textiles, a shaft holds thread guides; everywhere else in industry, it is a rotating rod that transmits power.

To most people, a shaft is a long rod or pole, often one that spins. A mine has a vertical shaft; a car has a driveshaft. In everyday language, it can mean almost any axle, rod, or pole that runs through a machine or structure and carries force or load from one point to another.

In textile production, the shaft is something different: a fixed horizontal bar that forms part of the loom. Each shaft holds a set of heddles, the wire loops through which warp threads pass. When the weaver or the loom's mechanism raises and lowers the shafts using treadles or cams, the heddles lift the selected warp threads to create the shed, the opening through which the shuttle passes with the weft. The shaft itself does not rotate; it moves up and down in a controlled rhythm. A loom might have four, eight, or more shafts, each raising different groups of threads in sequence to produce the weave pattern.

The broader industrial family of shafts, all rotary in nature, carries no shed-making function. A propeller shaft transmits torque from a gearbox to a differential. A cardan shaft, fitted with universal joints, allows rotary power to flow around corners and bends. A half shaft on a car extends power from the differential to each wheel. These shafts spin continuously or on demand, not oscillate. They are load-bearing, power-carrying members, often made of steel or alloy steel, and they are measured for rigidity, torsional stress, and critical speed.

The word diverged because the root sense is simply a long, rigid, cylindrical form. In looms, that form solves a mechanical problem of parallel control: many threads must be raised together. In engines and vehicles, it solves a different problem: transmitting rotary force efficiently over distance. The heddle shaft is static and selective; the drive shaft is dynamic and integral. Both kept the name 'shaft' because both do what shafts do: they run through the machine and carry elements along their length.
