Shear: Machine vs. Motion
In metalworking, shear names the machine itself. Everywhere else, it names the cutting action the machine performs.
To most people, shear means to cut. You shear a sheep's wool. Scissors shear fabric. The verb is older than the noun and wider in use. The industrial shear machine takes its name from this verb, the way a lathe takes its name from the lathing process or a press from pressing.
In metalworking, a shear is a large hydraulic or mechanical press with upper and lower blades that meet to slice sheet metal cleanly in one stroke. The machine sits on the shop floor, bolted down, fed by hand or conveyor. It cuts mild steel, stainless, aluminium, even copper in gauges up to several millimetres thick. The operator aligns the blank against a backstop and pushes the material under the blade. When the machine closes, the shearing action is instant and violent: the blade forces the metal to fail along a line. No saw teeth, no grinding, no melting. The result is a clean edge, though one that shows the metal worked cold and torn, not cut.
Other trades borrowed the word shear from this machine, or from the cutting action itself. In textile production, pinking shears are hand-held scissors with zigzag blades that cut cloth without fraying the edge. The shear-cake in mining is a refractory plug that seals a furnace door, named for the way it shears or cuts a seal against the opening. Shearing in coal mining means making a vertical side cut into the coal face, the way a shear blade cuts a line through metal.
The verb and the machine diverged because metalworking industrialised the action and needed a name for the tool. In mechanical engineering, shear force itself became technical: a shear centre is not a part of the machine but a geometric point in a beam section where a force can act without twisting the section. Here the word shear refers to the type of force, not to cutting at all, but to the internal stress that the machine produces when it works.
