Shingle: From Roof to Furnace
On a roof, shingles protect; in the foundry, shingling purges metal of its impurities through repeated hammer blows.
To most people, a shingle is a flat or textured tile that covers a roof or wall. Asphalt shingles, made from felt or fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and topped with mineral granules, are by far the most common roofing material in North America. They overlap one another, like fish scales, to shed water and provide the three-dimensional appearance architects and homeowners expect.
In a foundry or steel mill, shingling means something entirely different and far more violent. The metalworker heats cast iron or steel until it is just soft enough to hammer, then strikes it repeatedly with heavy mechanical or hand-held hammers. Each blow compresses the metal and forces out cinder, slag, and other impurities that have become trapped within it during casting or earlier processing. The expelled material falls away as dust and flakes, leaving behind denser, cleaner metal. This process was essential before rolling mills became standard; it is still used today when a batch of metal needs extra purification before forging into critical parts.
The two meanings share a visual metaphor. Roof shingles overlap in layers; shingled metal is built up in layers of hammer blows, each one breaking apart the weak or contaminated surface and forcing the impurities outward. The word itself may come from Old English or Latin roots meaning to split or divide, a sense that fits both the overlapping wooden roof shakes of medieval buildings and the destructive compression at the anvil.
Shingling as a metallurgical term has largely faded from everyday shop-floor speech, replaced by mechanical rolling, annealing, and other standardized processes. But the term remains in technical glossaries and in the memory of metalworkers trained in traditional hammer work. The roofing shingle, by contrast, has only grown more common and more uniform, its meaning now divorced from the anvil.
