Shunt: The railway switch, not the dodge
To most people, shunt means to push something aside or avoid it. On the rail, it means something precise: moving rolling stock between tracks.
In everyday English, to shunt is to shift or sideline something. You shunt responsibility onto someone else. You shunt a problem to another department. The word carries a sense of evasion or delay, of moving something out of the way so you do not have to deal with it now.
On the railway, a shunt is a switch, also called a point or turnout. It is a section of track with a movable rail that guides a train or wagon from one line onto another. A shunt is typically operated by hand lever, electric actuator, or hydraulic mechanism. A shunter, the locomotive that performs this work, couples to rolling stock and maneuvers it into sidings, yards, or loading docks by opening and closing shunts to direct its path. This is precise, technical work. The shunt must be set to the correct position before the train moves through it, and the train must approach at safe speed so the wheels engage the rails cleanly.
The physical layout matters. A shunting neck is a short dead-end spur alongside a main line that lets a train back into a siding or yard without blocking through traffic. The train uses shunts to enter and leave the neck, and the neck itself is a feature of railway design built around the need to shunt.
The metaphorical sense and the railway sense do share a root idea: moving something from one path to another. But the railway meaning is neither evasive nor hesitant. It is a deliberate, physical act with safety rules and operational purpose. A shunt changes the route of traffic; it does not avoid responsibility.
