Tickover: From Clock to Engine Idle
Tickover means a slow, steady ticking sound to most people, but mechanics use it to describe an engine running at its lowest stable speed.
To anyone outside a garage, tickover suggests the gentle ticking of a clock or watch, a sound marking steady, incremental progress. The word carries an almost peaceful quality, something small and regular and reliable. That everyday meaning still applies in the shop, but it has been narrowed and sharpened into something much more specific and precise.
In automotive work, tickover is the idle speed at which an engine runs when the throttle is closed and the vehicle is stationary or coasting. On a motorcycle, tickover is especially critical: the engine must turn over fast enough to keep the spark plugs firing and the fuel flowing, yet slow enough to avoid creeping forward on a closed throttle. A typical motorbike tickover sits between 1,000 and 2,000 revolutions per minute, though this varies by engine design and fuel type. Mechanics adjust tickover by turning a screw on the carburetor or through electronic control systems on fuel-injected bikes.
The term works the same way in four-wheeled vehicles, though car idle speeds have drifted upward over decades and now often sit between 600 and 900 rpm. Trucks and larger engines may idle higher still. A rougher or unstable tickover can signal a blocked fuel injector, a vacuum leak, fouled spark plugs, or ignition timing creep. A tickover that is set too high wastes fuel and wears bearings; too low and the engine stalls.
The metaphor runs deep. A clock ticks steadily at the same rate regardless of what is happening around it. An engine at tickover behaves the same way: it fires regularly, burns a small amount of fuel at a constant rate, and turns over with a predictable rhythm. Both are mechanisms doing their minimum useful work. The transfer from timekeeping to engines happened naturally in the early automotive era, when the sound and feel of a running engine was so important to a mechanic's diagnosis that the ticking rhythm became the primary image of a working machine.
Tickover remains a term of the shop floor and the practical mechanic, less common in modern technical manuals where idle speed or idle rpm have taken over. But on a motorbike especially, where mechanical sympathy between rider and machine is part of the craft, tickover still carries the weight it always did: the sound of an engine ready to go, ticking like a clock.
