roger

Received (used in radio communications to acknowledge that a message has been received and understood)

RY

A test pattern consisting of a repeating character string alternating letters R and Y, used to test five-level teleprinter and radioteletype (RTTY) systems.

saturation

The condition at which a component of the system has reached its maximum traffic-handling capacity, i.e. one erlang per circuit.

SCADA

Acronym of supervisory control and data acquisition, an electrical network typically containing at least IED's, RTU's, and a master station equipped with an HMI; used to monitor and control process automation systems, such as those used by electrical and water utilities.

selfie

A photographic self-portrait, especially one taken manually (not using a timer, tripod etc.) with a small camera or mobile phone.

sequential logic

A form of digital circuit logic where the current outputs depend not only on the current inputs, but also on a memory of past inputs and states.

SerDes

A pair of functional blocks used in high-speed communications to compensate for limited input/output, converting data between serial data and parallel interfaces in each direction.

short circuit

A usually unintentional connection of low resistance or impedance in a circuit such that excessive and often damaging current flows in it.

shortwave

An electromagnetic wave with a relatively short wavelength; specifically, one with a wavelength generally between 10 and 100 metres, corresponding to a frequency between 3 and 30 megahertz.

signal

An electromagnetic action, normally a voltage that is a function of time, that conveys the information of the radio or TV program or of communication with another party.

signal processing

A subfield of electrical engineering focusing on analyzing, modifying and synthesizing signals, such as sound, images, potential fields, seismic signals, altimetry processing, and scientific measurements.

software defined radio

A radio that creates and receives radio signals through software controlled DSPs (digital signal processors) with ADCs (analog-to-digital converters) and DACs (digital-to-analog converters).

solar generator

A battery box, capable of providing power in amounts like a generator. It is not a generator, not generating any electricity from fuel, merely storing power previously charged in the unit. The power stored in the unit does not necessarily need to be provided by solar panels, mains power can also be used to charge the unit, or any other electricity source. Input power may also be streamed directly as output power.

solar power

The conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics, indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a combination of the two.

spaghetti

Something physically resembling spaghetti (noun 1 sense 1) in appearance or consistency, or in being tangled.

spectral gating

A signal processing technique used primarily for noise reduction and creative sound design; converting a signal into the frequency domain (a spectrogram), estimating a noise threshold for each frequency band, and then gating" (muting or reducing the volume of) any signal below that threshold.

spin magnetic moment

The part of the magnetic moment of an object that originates from its spin, rather than its movement, in which the magnetic field is generated when an electron rotates on its axis.

spot beam

A satellite signal that is specially concentrated in power (i.e. sent by a high-gain antenna) so that it will cover only a limited geographic area on Earth.
