The cutting head houses either a circular saw blade, reciprocating blade, or abrasive cutting wire, depending on the material being cut and the depth required.
These machines are most commonly deployed in stone processing facilities, where they cut limestone, marble, granite, and sandstone into manageable blocks or slabs. The track-mounted design allows operators to make repeatable horizontal passes without manual repositioning of heavy stone, improving both safety and precision. Operation and variants
Power sources include electric motors, diesel engines, or pneumatic systems, depending on site conditions and portability requirements. Smaller workshop versions sit on benches or lightweight frames; larger industrial models may span wall heights of 6 metres or more. The track gauge and blade type are selected to match specific cutting tasks: fine finishing work uses diamond wire or thin-kerf blades, while rough primary breaking uses wider, more aggressive cutting heads.
Maintenance centres on blade wear, track alignment, and drive-belt tension. Blade life varies widely based on material hardness, feed speed, and coolant application; operators typically monitor cutting resistance and noise to detect dull blades before quality deteriorates. The wheeled carriage bearings and track bed must be kept clean and free of stone dust buildup, which accelerates wear and causes binding.
The name references its function: a machine that cuts into a wall or wall-like vertical surface, following an arc (or more precisely, a horizontal plane) through the material. The term is used primarily in European stone trades and appears less frequently in North American English, where similar equipment may be called a wall saw or gang saw system.
