A buffer stop is a solid obstacle mounted on the track bed at the terminus of a railway line or siding, designed to absorb and arrest the forward motion of a train or rail vehicle that overshoots the intended stopping point. It serves as the final mechanical safeguard when brakes fail, signals are missed, or a vehicle rolls downgrade uncontrolled. The device typically consists of a heavy steel frame bolted to concrete foundations, with elastomeric or hydraulic energy-absorbing elements sandwiched between the frame and a striking face that contacts the vehicle's coupling or underframe.

Buffer stops fall into two main categories: fixed and portable. Fixed stops are permanent installations at passenger terminus stations, industrial sidings, and freight yards where trains regularly need hard stopping boundaries. Portable stops, used on temporary sidings or construction lines, weigh less but are mechanically similar. The striking face is angled or wedge-shaped to engage smoothly with the vehicle's coupler or lower frame, directing impact energy downward into the absorbing mechanism rather than allowing lateral deflection that could cause derailment.

Energy absorption and impact performance

The energy absorption capacity depends on the stop's design and the vehicle mass it must handle. A typical heavy-duty buffer stop at a main passenger terminus might be rated for a 200-tonne train striking at 4 to 6 kilometres per hour. The hydraulic or spring-damping elements dissipate this kinetic energy gradually over a stroke of 150 to 300 millimetres, preventing the abrupt deceleration that would injure passengers or damage cargo. Over-centre designs using mechanical springs or gas-filled cylinders allow the stop to reset after an impact, though hydraulic stops often require resetting by mechanical means.

Buffer stops are essential infrastructure at passenger terminus platforms, where it is impossible to continue track beyond the platform. They are equally critical on dead-end industrial sidings and at the heads of shunting yards where vehicles are left unattended. The device must be regularly inspected for corrosion of the frame, leakage or degradation of hydraulic fluid, and wear on the striker face. A worn or weakened buffer stop may compress beyond its design stroke and strike the solid foundation, transmitting unabsorbed impact directly to vehicles and infrastructure.

The name derives from the historic railway practice of mounting buffers (spring-loaded cylindrical shock absorbers mounted on vehicle couplers) on either side of a vehicle, which would compress on impact. A buffer stop was simply the fixed structure against which these buffers would press. Although modern coupling systems differ, the term persists as a description of any fixed end-of-line collision device. In some regions the device is called a scotch block (particularly for portable units placed under wheels as mechanical locks) or a bumping post, though these terms are less precise.
