A device in the cab of a locomotive or train which displays the status of signals along the track.

A cab signal is an electrical or electronic display mounted in the locomotive cab that receives and shows the aspect of the wayside signal ahead without the driver having to look outside. Instead of reading a physical signal post at distance, the driver sees the same information, often as a colored light or needle, on an instrument panel within arm's reach. This system bridges the gap between fixed trackside signaling and real-time information delivery to the person controlling the train.

Cab signals work through inductive coupling or radio transmission from track circuits or balises buried in or alongside the rails. As the train passes over these transmitters, coded pulses are picked up by a receiver mounted under the locomotive and relayed to the display in the cab. The signal aspect, whether "clear," "approach," "stop," or intermediate speeds in higher-speed territory, appears continuously rather than appearing only when the driver draws level with a wayside post. This is particularly valuable on high-speed lines where reaction time is critical and visibility may be poor.

The primary advantage is safety through reduced driver error and fatigue. A driver does not need to scan constantly for distant signals or misread a signal due to weather, sun angle, or tiredness. Many cab signal systems integrate with automatic train protection, cutting power or applying brakes if the driver does not acknowledge a restrictive signal or exceeds the permitted speed for that aspect. On freight lines and busy urban transit, cab signals reduce accidents and allow closer train spacing.

Variants and limitations

Older cab signal systems used mechanical drum displays or needle gauges; modern systems use LED aspect lights or digital screens showing speed limits and next signal state. Some railways in North America rely primarily on cab signals and have minimal trackside signal heads, while European railways typically run cab signals alongside existing wayside signals as a backup layer. The technology works reliably in fog, rain, and darkness, but system failures demand that the driver revert to trackside signals or manual operation.

Cab signals are distinct from cab-mounted speed control equipment or ETCS (European Train Control System), though the latter incorporates cab signaling principles into a broader safety architecture. The term originated in North American freight and commuter rail practice and remains most common in that context, though versions appear worldwide on metro systems and dedicated passenger lines where throughput and safety justify the installation cost.
