In manufacturing contexts, attire means the complete set of protective clothing and footwear worn to meet safety requirements and operational demands of the workplace. This goes far beyond general dress: it is specified by regulation, process hazard, and facility standards. A foundry worker's attire differs entirely from a cleanroom technician's, and both are non-negotiable.
The components vary by trade and hazard class. Textile mills require tightly fitted clothing with no loose ends to prevent entanglement in rotating machinery; flame-resistant fabrics rated to NFPA 2112 or equivalent are mandatory in facilities handling flammable liquids or gases. Chemical plants specify chemical-resistant suits, often butyl rubber or laminated polyethylene depending on the substance. Steel mills mandate leather aprons, face shields, and spats. Metalworking operations require cut-resistant sleeves and gloves; food processing demands food-grade synthetic garments and beard covers.
Standards and enforcement
Attire requirements are codified in facility SOPs (standard operating procedures), often derived from OSHA regulations, industry standards like ANSI/ASSE standards, or insurer mandates. Non-compliance is typically grounds for immediate removal from the work area. Employers bear liability for enforced compliance; workers bear responsibility for maintaining garments in specified condition, including regular inspection for tears, chemical contamination, or loss of protective coating.
The term itself reflects industrial practice where what you wear is not a choice but an integral control in the hazard management system. Unlike personal dress code, attire is preventive safety equipment. Worn, degraded, or improper attire is treated the same as missing or faulty PPE: it is a failure of the control, not a style matter.
