yf: moving yarn to the front for the next stitch
In hand knitting and machine knitting, yarn forward (yf) means moving the working yarn from the back of the needles to the front before working the next stitch. This deliberate repositioning creates an eyelet, a small decorative hole in the fabric. The yarn sits in front of the needles temporarily, ready to be caught by the next stitch worked. On the return pass, the yarn returns to its standard position.
The yf command appears constantly in lace patterns and decorative knitting instructions. It works alongside yarn over (yo) and yarn back (yb) as part of the basic vocabulary of stitch manipulation. While yarn over typically refers to wrapping yarn around a needle to increase stitches, yarn forward is purely positional: no new loop is created, and stitch count remains unchanged. The hole forms because the forward yarn is caught by the following stitch, leaving a gap where the yarn previously sat.
Machine versus hand knitting
Hand knitters execute yf by hand between stitches. Machine operators accomplish the same effect by moving the carriage or yarn guides so the yarn sits in front of the sinker plate or needle bed before the next pass. Industrial flat-bed machines and circular machines handle this differently depending on their design and needle arrangement. Electronic machines can be programmed to execute yf automatically at specified rows.
Pattern density determines whether yf appears frequently or rarely. Dense all-over lace patterns may require yf on every row or every other row, while minimal decorative patterns use it sparingly. The size of the resulting eyelet depends on stitch gauge, yarn weight, and whether multiple yf operations occur consecutively. Thicker yarns produce larger, more visible holes; fine yarns create subtle texture.
Tension faults around eyelets are common trouble spots. If the yarn sits too loosely in front position, the subsequent stitch may be uneven or sloppy. If the yarn is pulled too tight during the yf movement, the stitch immediately following can distort or split. This is why lace knitting demands consistent yarn management and why machine operators monitor gauge closely in decorative sections.
