Attle: waste rock with almost no ore value
Attle is the broken rock extracted during mining that contains little to no economically recoverable ore. It is the inevitable byproduct of underground and surface mining operations, separated from ore during the selection process. The material ranges from fist-sized fragments to fine dust, depending on the mining method and the hardness of the host rock.
In hard rock mining, attle accumulates in substantial volume. A copper mine extracting ore grading 0.5% copper may move five to ten tonnes of attle for every tonne of ore sent to the mill. This waste must be moved, stored, or disposed of, making attle management a significant operating cost. The material is usually stacked in waste rock piles near the mine, or in larger operations, transported by truck or conveyor to dedicated storage areas.
The composition of attle depends on the geology. In a gold mine working through granite country rock, attle will be mostly quartz and feldspar with little precious metal. In base metal mines, attle may contain trace amounts of the target metal but below the economic threshold for recovery. Some attle can be broken down further to recover finer ore particles; other piles are simply left to weather.
The term and its origins
Attle is a regional English word with roots in mining districts of the Pennines and Cornwall. It describes the rough, broken character of the waste: worthless bits of stone left behind. The word appears in mining records from at least the 18th century, particularly in lead and tin mining. It is less common in modern standardized mining vocabulary, where operators now often use waste rock, overburden, or tailings, though these terms are not exact synonyms.Attle differs from tailings, which is the fine ground waste from ore processing mills. Attle also differs from overburden, which is the unmineralized rock removed before mining begins. Attle is the coarse, broken ore-bearing rock rejected during sorting and concentration at the mine mouth.
In modern mining, attle piles present environmental concerns. Acid mine drainage can develop if sulphide minerals in the attle oxidize when exposed to air and water. Dust control, seepage management, and slope stability are routine challenges. Some operations now examine attle piles for recovery value as ore grades drop, or investigate whether the material can be used in construction aggregate or road base. The term remains in use in regional mining operations and heritage mining sites.
