A particularly difficult seam to caulk on a ship's hull, specifically the curved seam where the deck planking meets the side of the ship, near the scupper gutters.

Devil seam: the shipwright's nightmare joint

A devil seam is the curved junction where deck planking meets the ship's hull side, typically running near the scupper gutters. This seam runs the full length of the vessel and marks the transition between the flat deck and the sloping hull planks, creating an acute angle that is extremely difficult to caulk watertight.

The angle of this seam makes it one of the most labour-intensive joints in wooden shipbuilding. The planks meet at a sharp enough angle that a caulking iron cannot be driven straight into the seam; the caulker must work at an awkward angle, often lying or stretching across the deck. Water pressure and thermal movement cause the joint to work constantly, opening and closing with changes in humidity and temperature, which breaks the caulking compound repeatedly.

Traditional oakum and pitch were the standard materials for devil seams, but the joint's geometry meant the oakum could never be driven fully home. The compound would compress and shrink, leaving gaps that leaked almost immediately after launching. The proximity to scuppers meant any leak in a devil seam would drain water directly overboard during heavy weather, but could also trap water in the bilges if the angle reversed the flow direction in harbour.

The name reflects genuine frustration among shipwrights. Some sources suggest the seam was called this because only the devil could caulk it successfully, though others simply describe it as the most devilishly awkward seam on the hull. The term appears consistently in nineteenth-century shipbuilding records and surveyors' reports as a known point of chronic leakage on wooden vessels.

Modern steel shipbuilding solved this problem through welding, but the devil seam remains a recognized term in restoration work on wooden vessels and in maritime history. Modern restorers using traditional methods often accept that devil seams will require more frequent maintenance and re-caulking than other hull seams, particularly after the ship has been in service for several years.
