To bar down is to use a pry bar, typically steel and 4 to 6 feet long, to break up and loosen ore that has compacted or bridged inside a mine car or ore chute. The ore becomes wedged during loading or transport, creating an arch that prevents gravity flow and stops the car from emptying. A worker inserts the bar and applies leverage to crack the frozen mass and allow it to drop through.
The term is old and practical: you bar the material down with force and weight. In deep shaft mines, ore carts would sit on inclined tracks leading to processing points, and gravity alone often could not move densely packed load. A barman would approach the stuck car with the pry bar, strike the wedged ore, work the bar into gaps, and apply downward pressure until the mass fractured and flowed. The work was routine but carried real risk: sudden collapse of the arch could dump ore on hands or feet, and the bar itself could slip or twist unexpectedly.
The specific geometry of the stuck ore mattered. Fine ore, especially when damp or containing clay, compacts into near-concrete hardness. Coarser fragments bridge more easily, creating large voids that resist breakage. Different ore types required different technique: hard rock needed sharp, percussive strikes, while softer clay-bound material responded to steady leverage. Experience taught barmen where to insert the bar for maximum mechanical advantage.
Bar down remains common in underground and open-pit operations where ore handling depends on chutes and gravity flow. Modern operations use vibrators, air cannons, and hydraulic shakers for the same purpose, but manual barring persists in older mines and where equipment is unavailable or uneconomical. The verb survives in mining speech even when the tool has been automated away.
