An undercutter is a powered cutting tool that saws horizontally into rock faces from below, creating a undercut slot before the main blast or mechanical breakage. The tool holds a circular saw blade or wire saw that cuts into the base of a rock wall, typically to a depth of 1 to 3 meters depending on the rock type and machine size. This undercut weakens the rock mass and creates a free face that allows the overlying stone to break more cleanly and predictably when shot or wedged.

Most undercuts are made with electrically or hydraulically powered circular saws mounted on rigid arms that can be positioned and angled to follow the contour of the rock face. The blade itself is usually a segmented diamond or tungsten-carbide tipped saw, 60 to 150 centimeters in diameter, rotating at 500 to 1500 rpm depending on the rock hardness and blade type. The depth of cut and angle can be adjusted to suit the joint pattern and stress direction in the rock. Softer rocks like limestone or sandstone require less aggressive blade geometry than hard granite or basalt.

Use in stone extraction and construction

Undercuts are standard in dimension stone quarrying, where the goal is to extract large intact blocks rather than crush rock for aggregate. The saw creates two or three perpendicular faces on a block before lifting it free. In hard rock mining, undercuts are often made before blasting to control fragmentation and direct the throw of rock. Without an undercut, a blast can fracture stone far beyond the intended boundary, wasting material and creating instability.

The main risk is that the saw blade can bind or throw fragments if it encounters a tight seam, joint cavity, or vein of softer material. Water cooling is standard practice to reduce dust and heat, but it can also cause the blade to slip if the feed speed is too fast for the rock type. Damaged blades are expensive and downtime is critical in high-volume operations, so blade selection and maintenance are closely monitored.

The term "undercutter" comes directly from the method: cutting under the rock before removing it. The tool is also called a "undercut saw" or "bench saw" in some regions. In European quarrying, similar machines are sometimes called "frame saws" when they cut multiple faces in one pass, though their principle is identical. The undercutter sits at the intersection of manual stone-working tradition and industrial mechanization, and remains essential wherever precision extraction matters more than speed.
