biscuitry

The process of inserting biscuits (thin ovals of wood or other material) into mating slots in order to provide a gluing surface.

Biscuitry is the practice of joining two pieces of wood by cutting matching crescent-shaped slots into their edges, then inserting a compressed wooden wafer (the biscuit) into those slots with glue. The biscuit swells slightly when exposed to moisture in the glue, locking the joint and increasing surface area for the adhesive. It sits between traditional doweling and pocket-hole joinery in terms of speed, strength, and equipment cost.

A biscuit is typically made from beech or birch, measuring around 20mm wide by 50-60mm long and roughly 3mm thick in its resting state. The slots are cut with a plate jointer (or biscuit jointer), a handheld power tool fitted with a thin circular blade that plunges perpendicular to the tool base. Different biscuit sizes exist, commonly labeled #0, #10, and #20, with larger numbers accommodating thicker stock and longer joints.

When biscuitry works and when it fails

The method performs well for edge-to-edge joints and mitered corners in cabinet work, frame assembly, and solid wood furniture. It handles seasonal wood movement reasonably well because the joint has some float. The alignment is accurate and repeatable without clamping aids. However, biscuits alone provide minimal structural strength compared to mortise-and-tenon or properly cut dovetails. They work best as alignment helpers combined with glue, not as primary load-bearing elements. Joints used for shelving or areas subject to racking stress should rely on stronger methods.

Biscuitry fails when the jointer base is not held flat against both workpieces, resulting in misaligned slots and gaps. Moisture from the glue causes the wood fibers around the biscuit to swell unevenly, sometimes causing the joint to bow or the surrounding wood to split if grain direction is unfavorable. Using stale biscuits that have absorbed ambient moisture also weakens the swelling action and the glue bond.

The term "biscuit" derives from the object's appearance, and the method became widespread in commercial cabinetry during the 1980s as plate joiners became affordable. It remains a standard technique in production shops and jobsite carpentry where speed and repeatability matter, and where the appearance of fasteners must be clean. For heirloom furniture or structural applications, traditional mortise work remains the benchmark.
