A joint formed by adjacent, separate section of material, such as where two neighboring pieces of insulation abut.

A butt joint is formed when the end or edge of one workpiece is placed directly against the face, edge, or end of another, then fastened. It is the simplest joint in woodworking, requiring no interlocking geometry, no shaping, and minimal precision. A butt joint might join two boards edge-to-edge to make a panel wider, or join a rail to a post where the rail's end meets the post's face. The joint gets its name from the way the pieces simply butt against each other without overlap or indentation.
The strength of a butt joint depends entirely on its fastening method. Nailed or screwed, a butt joint relies on shear resistance at the junction; glued, it depends on end-grain and edge-grain absorption, which is weaker than long-grain gluing. Woodworkers often combine methods: glue plus mechanical fasteners. Corner butt joints, where a rail meets a post at right angles, are especially prone to racking (skewing under stress) because the fasteners must resist both withdrawal and shear across the grain interface.
Where butt joints appear in practice
Butt joints dominate rough framing, box construction, and utility woodwork. They are standard in cabinet and door making, where a stile (vertical member) receives rails (horizontal members) at its face. Edge-to-edge butt joints appear in panel glue-ups for shelves and tabletops. In insulation work and drywall trades, butt joints are where two sheets or batts meet end-to-end; these joints are typically taped, mudded, or caulked to bridge the gap and seal against air movement.
The main weakness is insufficient glue surface area. Where a stronger joint is needed, woodworkers substitute mortise-and-tenon, dowel, or biscuit joinery. Butt joints also show gaps easily if wood moves: seasonal expansion and contraction can open the joint, revealing a visible line. In exposed work, this cosmetic failure is a real drawback; in cabinet interiors or framing, it matters less.
A well-made butt joint in quality softwood or hardwood, reinforced with glue and screws, will hold for years in furniture and cabinetry. In structural framing, multiple fasteners and careful grain orientation improve reliability. The simplicity that makes a butt joint fast to cut and assemble is also what limits its load capacity and longevity in high-stress applications.
