rosehead: the old conical drill for rough boring
A rosehead is a conical drill with multiple radiating flutes or blades arranged around its tip, historically the standard tool for boring holes in wood before twist drills became dominant. The bit resembles a rose in profile when viewed from above, which is where it gets its name. It cuts by scraping and shearing rather than by the efficient helical action of a twist drill, making it slower and messier, but it was rugged and tolerated misalignment better than more refined bits.
The typical rosehead has between 4 and 6 radiating blades (or petals) that slope downward from a central cone. The blades are relatively flat and simple to sharpen: you just hone each face on a stone. The bit works best in a brace with manual feed pressure, where the user can feel the tool tracking straight and respond if it wanders. In power tools, roseheads generate chatter and tear-out more readily than twist drills, especially when breaking through the far side of the workpiece.
Roseheads come in diameters from roughly 6mm up to 50mm or larger. For deep boring in solid wood, they can require considerable turning effort because they do not self-feed; you must push the brace handle steadily. They leave a rougher hole than twist drills and often require reaming or sand-papering to size. The lack of flute geometry also means chips do not clear as quickly, so the bit heats up in dense hardwoods.
Why they persist: Although modern twist drills and spade bits have superseded roseheads in most shops, they remain in use for specialty work. A rosehead tolerated spindle runout that would jam or snap a twist drill, and it does not grab if the wood suddenly gives way (important on old-fashioned hand braces). Antique tool collectors and heritage craftspeople still buy them because they are period-correct and because some carpenters simply prefer the tactile feedback of a brace with a rosehead to an electric drill.
The rosehead occupies a historical niche between the auger (which has a screw and cutting lips for aggressive self-feed) and the twist drill (which works fast but demands precise runout and careful hand-feeding). It is slower than either, but it was the reliable middle tool for portable drilling equipment before electric motors became standard on jobsites.
