A biscuit is a small, flat, oval wafer made from compressed beech or birch that sits inside matching slots cut into two pieces of wood to align and strengthen their joint. When glue is applied, the biscuit swells slightly as it absorbs moisture, expanding to grip both slots and lock the pieces together with significant shear strength. A single biscuit typically measures around 20 mm long by 13 mm wide by 3.5 mm thick, though larger and smaller variants exist.

The biscuit joinery system emerged in the 1950s and depends on a specialized plunge-cutting tool called a biscuit jointer. The jointer has a circular blade that cuts a precise slot matching the biscuit's profile; a woodworker aligns the tool's fence with layout marks on both pieces, then plunges the spinning blade to create the mating slots. The biscuit then seats loosely in both slots before assembly, requiring no other fastening.

Practical limitations and common failures

Biscuits work best on edge-to-edge and face-to-edge joints where grain direction allows adequate glue coverage. They are less reliable on end grain, which absorbs glue unevenly and reduces the moisture-driven swelling that provides clamping action. If the wood is already at very high moisture content, the biscuit cannot swell enough to develop grip. Conversely, if ambient humidity is too low during glue-up, the joint may fail to set properly. The slot itself concentrates stress at its corners, potentially initiating cracks if the joint bears heavy shear loads.

Assembly pressure matters more than with dowels; biscuit joints require moderate clamp pressure applied within minutes of glue application while the wafer is still swelling. Over-clamping can crush the biscuit and reduce its holding power. The spacing and number of biscuits depend on joint length: a 24 inch edge joint typically uses three or four biscuits spaced evenly, never closer than 2 inches from an end.

Biscuit joinery competes with dowels, mortise and tenon joints, and pocket-hole fastening. Its speed of layout and execution make it popular in cabinet shops, but its dependence on moisture and lower shear strength compared to traditional joinery means it is often reserved for cabinet panels, shelving, and face frames rather than structural frames or loaded furniture joints.
