TGV: France's flagship high-speed rail system

The TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) is a high-speed passenger rail network and fleet operated by SNCF, France's national railway company. The trains themselves are purpose-built electric units designed to operate on dedicated tracks at sustained speeds of 300 km/h or higher, with most commercial services running at 250, 300 km/h depending on route and track conditions. The network links Paris to major cities across France and connects to neighboring countries, forming the backbone of European high-speed rail.

The fleet comprises several generations of rolling stock. Earlier units like the Paris-Sud-Est (PSE) trains that entered service in 1981 established the prototype; later variants including the TGV Duplex and TGV InOui reflect advances in aerodynamics, seating capacity, and energy efficiency. All TGV trains draw power from overhead catenary lines at 25 kV AC, 50 Hz. The trains use articulated cars mounted on small-diameter bogies to reduce unsprung mass and allow tighter curves than conventional high-speed designs.

Track infrastructure is critical to TGV operation. Dedicated lines use concrete sleepers on ballastless or ballasted beds, with rail aligned to very tight tolerances to permit high-speed running. Curves are banked and radiused to minimize lateral forces; grades rarely exceed 3.5 percent. Signaling relies on automatic train protection (ATP) systems that enforce speed compliance and prevent overruns, rather than lineside signals.

Maintenance demands differ sharply from conventional rail. Pantograph wear, wheel flats from braking, and bogie alignment require frequent inspection and replacement on strict schedules. The specialized infrastructure costs, dedicated rights of way, grade separation, and signal systems, mean TGV networks demand sustained high passenger volumes to justify investment. Routes serving short distances or low-demand corridors remain unviable for TGV operation.

Outside France, TGV technology has influenced rail development across Europe. Spain operates the AVE system on similar principles; South Korea and Japan have deployed TGV-derived designs under license. The name itself reflects the French operational philosophy: optimizing speed and comfort on purpose-built corridors rather than adapting existing routes.
