Bond timber consists of wooden beams laid horizontally within the thickness of masonry walls, their ends projecting into or through the wall structure. These timbers function as tensile reinforcement, preventing the wall from separating into independent vertical slices under lateral stress, settlement, or thermal movement. The wood bridges across headers, stretchers, or multiple wythes, effectively stitching the masonry together in the longitudinal direction.
Placement follows the bed joint pattern, typically every four to six courses of brick or stone, though spacing varies with wall height, exposure, and the quality of mortar in use. The timber ends are commonly left slightly proud of the wall face during construction, then trimmed flush after the mortar sets. In thick walls, multiple parallel timbers may be used across the depth. Length and cross-section depend on wall thickness: a one-foot wall might use 4 by 4 inch timbers, while thicker structures require larger stock.
Historic and Regional Practice
Bond timber was standard in English bond and Flemish bond brickwork from the 16th century through the early 20th century, particularly in tall load-bearing masonry buildings. Its use diminished with the rise of cavity walls and steel reinforcement, which provide superior durability and performance. In regions lacking iron or where wrought iron was too costly, timber remained the preferred tie material well into the 1900s.
The primary risk is decay. Wood buried in mortar and masonry absorbs moisture and is vulnerable to rot, especially where the timber end is exposed to weather or where the surrounding mortar cracks and admits water. Once decay begins, the wood loses section rapidly and ceases to provide restraint. The term itself reflects the timber's role in the masonry bond pattern, though it performs a structural function distinct from decorative or leveling timber.
Modern masonry relies on metal ties, straps, and reinforcing bar, which resist corrosion and deterioration far better than wood. However, bond timber remains present in countless older structures and is often encountered during renovation, where its condition and performance must be assessed as part of conservation planning.
