Broadcasting means dispersing seed across a field in a scattered pattern rather than in rows. The operator either walks or drives across the ground, flinging or ejecting seed in a wide arc so it falls roughly evenly across the soil surface. This contrasts with precision drilling, which places seed at specific depths and intervals.
Hand broadcasting remains common for small plots, pasture renovation, and cover crops. The spreader holds seed in a bag or hopper at the hip and uses a flicking motion to cast it sideways as they walk. Mechanical broadcasters, towed or mounted on tractors, use either spinning disc spreaders (which fling seed outward by centrifugal force) or oscillating spouts to achieve coverage widths of 6 to 15 metres depending on the machine and seed size.
The main advantage is speed: a single pass covers much more ground than row drilling, and equipment costs are lower. Broadcasting also works well on rough or previously tilled land where furrow openers would clog. The drawback is uneven distribution. Wind can deflect light seed; patches receive too much or too little; and seed lands at varying depths, so germination becomes inconsistent. Competition and lodging often increase compared to drilled crops.
When broadcasting makes sense
Broadcasters are standard for establishing pastures, especially in spring or autumn when moisture favours quick establishment. They suit low-value seed like many grasses and legume mixes. Cereal growers broadcasting on previously prepared seedbeds accept lower yields to save on seeding equipment. Contractors often broadcast clover and ryegrass into stubble for no-till renovation.Successful broadcasting depends on calm weather, a receptive seedbed with good soil contact, and realistic variety choice. Small seed like clover needs finer adjustment than large seed like beans. Moisture at sowing and in the top 25 millimetres of soil is critical because seed cannot be placed precisely at the ideal depth. Operators must overlap passes carefully to avoid miss-strips, and knowledge of their machine's throw pattern is essential.
