A power cord is a flexible cable with a plug at one end and terminals or a connector at the other, designed to carry electrical current from a wall outlet or panel to an industrial tool, motor, or appliance. The cord itself consists of multiple insulated conductors (typically copper) bundled together and wrapped in an outer sheath, usually made of rubber, PVC, or thermoplastic. The plug end makes the connection to the building's electrical supply; the terminal end either plugs into the equipment or is permanently wired to it during installation.
Industrial power cords vary significantly in voltage, amperage rating, and conductor gauge. A standard household cord might carry 120V at 15 amps with 14 AWG wire, while a heavy-duty machine tool could require a 240V, 50-amp rated cord with 6 AWG copper conductors. The physical thickness and stiffness of the cord increases with amperage capacity. Outdoor and wet-location cords use heavier jacketing and are marked with a "W" rating; flexing-duty cords for power tools have reinforced construction to handle repeated bending without conductor fracture. Three-conductor cords carry hot, neutral, and ground; some industrial equipment uses four-conductor cords for 208V or 277V three-phase applications.
The cord's insulation is its critical safety element. Damaged jackets expose live conductors and create shock and fire hazards. Oil, solvents, and UV exposure degrade most standard jackets within months; equipment used in chemical plants or outdoors requires specially rated cords. Crushing under equipment weight or repeated flexing can internally fracture conductors long before visible damage appears, causing intermittent power loss or arcing at the connection point. The plug prongs and receptacle contacts are equally vulnerable to corrosion and loosening, which causes resistance heating and potential fire.
Terminology and standards
The term "power cord" encompasses both detachable cords (which can be replaced) and those permanently affixed to equipment. When the cable is built into the tool or appliance and cannot be unplugged, it is more precisely called "built-in power supply cable" or part of the "power entry module". Industrial specifications reference cord type by NEMA standard (in North America) or IEC standard (internationally); NEMA 5-15 and 5-20 are common household plugs, while NEMA L5-30 and L6-30 specify heavy-duty configurations for larger equipment.
A properly rated power cord is not simply a convenience but a load-bearing part of electrical safety. Undersizing a cord for the amperage draw causes insulation degradation and voltage drop; oversizing wastes material and adds cost without benefit. Facilities with heavy machinery and variable tool use often stock spare cords in common ratings (12 AWG, 10 AWG, 8 AWG) to avoid production downtime while awaiting replacement or repair. On production floors where cords are frequently relocated or coiled, management of cord damage through routing clips, protective covers, and regular inspection directly reduces electrical incidents and equipment failures.
