Gedge hook

A type of hook used in coupling railway vehicles together.

Gedge hook: a railway coupling hook, now mostly history

A Gedge hook was a mechanical hook used to couple railway wagons and carriages together, popular in British rail operations during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It consisted of a metal hook attached to a draught gear on one vehicle that engaged with a corresponding loop or eye on the adjacent vehicle, holding them in tension during normal operation.

The hook itself was relatively simple: a curved metal arm that could pivot slightly on its mounting, allowing it to drop into or lift out of the coupling ring on the next vehicle. The engagement was manual, requiring a shunter or railway worker to position the vehicles close together, then operate the hook by hand or with a pole to complete the connection. This was considerably more labour-intensive than later automatic couplers, and the process had to be repeated each time vehicles were separated or rearranged in a train.

Decline and displacement

The Gedge hook was gradually displaced by automatic coupling systems, most notably the Coupler coupling and later the Scharfenberg coupling, which could engage and disengage without manual intervention. These systems were safer for personnel, faster to operate, and more reliable under heavy loads. By the mid-twentieth century, Gedge hooks had become obsolete on mainline railways, though they persisted in limited use on heritage and narrow-gauge lines.

The term remains in historical rail documentation and appears in catalogues of coupling equipment, but you will rarely encounter a working example on modern railways. Preserved railways and industrial heritage sites may still use or display original Gedge-hooked vehicles as period exhibits. Understanding the mechanism is chiefly of value to historians, museum curators, and restoration specialists dealing with older rolling stock.
