edgebanding

Veneer or laminate of the same type of material as used for the surface of furniture and with width matching standard thicknesses of such material, used to conceal the exposed edges.

edgebanding: hiding the ugly truth about particle board

Edgebanding is a thin strip of material, typically veneer or laminate, glued to the exposed edges of engineered boards to match and protect the main surface. A panel of walnut veneer plywood or melamine-faced particle board has raw edges that look cheap, splinter easily, and absorb moisture; edgebanding covers those edges with the same visual material, making the finished piece look solid and intentional. It comes in rolls or pre-cut strips, usually between 19 mm and 50 mm wide, matching standard thicknesses from 2 mm up to about 40 mm.

The two main types are hot-melt adhesive backed and self-adhesive. Hot-melt banding requires either a handheld iron-on applicator or a stationary edge bander machine; the heat activates glue on the back of the strip and bonds it permanently to the board edge. Self-adhesive banding peels and sticks directly to the edge, faster but weaker for high-traffic furniture. Material choices match the substrate: solid wood edging for solid wood surfaces, veneer for veneer surfaces, or rigid PVC laminate for laminate-covered panels. The strip must be trimmed flush after application, usually with a hand planer, router, or belt sander.

Visible edges on shelving, cabinet sides, desktop undersides, and drawer fronts all demand edgebanding in production furniture. Without it, a melamine shelf looks half-finished; moisture swells the chipboard core and lifts the veneer. Moisture protection is critical in kitchens and bathrooms where bare edges will swell within weeks. Particle board is nearly always banded, because its exposed interior is visually and structurally weak; plywood edges are sometimes left bare in industrial settings but always banded in consumer goods.

Common failures include peeling caused by insufficient heat during application, poor surface preparation, or movement of the underlying board. Gaps between the edging and surface occur if the strip is undersized or applied to a warped edge. Over-sanding during trimming can thin the edging until it fractures or reveals glue lines. Moisture penetration past a poorly sealed edge joint is slow but certain, particularly at inside corners.

The name is literal: it bands the edge. The practice dates to veneered furniture, where solid wood edging was glued to veneer substrates; modern edgebanding simply standardized the strip widths and automation. It is invisible to the customer when done well, which is precisely why most people have never heard of it, despite encountering it daily on nearly every piece of office and residential furniture manufactured after 1980.
