A C-bander is someone who operates a receive-only satellite television system tuned to the C-band frequency range, typically between 3.7 and 4.2 GHz. The term emerged in the 1980s when backyard satellite dishes became accessible to consumers, before cable television and later direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) services dominated the market. C-banders install and maintain their own earth stations, usually large parabolic antennas mounted on residential property, to pull television signals directly from orbiting satellites.

C-band dishes are substantially larger than modern DBS andles, commonly ranging from 6 to 12 feet in diameter, because the longer wavelengths at C-band frequencies require bigger apertures to achieve adequate gain. The system includes the dish itself, a low-noise block converter (LNB) at the feed horn, a satellite receiver, and cabling to the television. C-banders choose their antenna's position and azimuth to track multiple satellites across the geostationary arc, gaining access to hundreds of channels including analog video, digital video, audio feeds, and data services not available through terrestrial broadcast.

The C-band spectrum carries both encrypted and unencrypted programming. Early C-banders could receive many channels freely, but as satellite operators implemented conditional access systems and moved premium services to higher-frequency Ku-band, the appeal of C-band reception narrowed. Today's C-bander population is smaller but dedicated, consisting of hobbyists, rural users in areas without cable or broadband infrastructure, and professionals who monitor satellite feeds for news gathering or telecommunications work.

Technical challenges include rain fade, interference from terrestrial microwave links operating in overlapping frequencies, and the need to properly align and occasionally repoint dishes as satellite orbital slots shift. Electrical noise in the receiver chain, signal polarization, and dish surface irregularities all affect reception quality. C-banders typically possess more technical knowledge than casual television viewers, understanding concepts like satellite transponder frequency plans, footprint coverage maps, and feed horn design.

The term C-bander carries no derogatory connotation within the trade, though it is now mostly historical. The hobby and professional practice persist in rural North America, parts of South America, Africa, and Asia, where C-band remains a viable distribution medium for television and internet services. The designation simply identifies the frequency band in use, distinguishing these operators from Ku-band and Ka-band satellite users.
