In spring, pines produce a distinctive burst of pale, upright growth called a candle. This is the new shoot emerging from the terminal bud, typically light green or cream-colored and soft-textured, extending several inches upward before hardening off. The name comes from the visual resemblance to a candle flame, and the term is used across forestry in temperate and boreal regions wherever pines are grown or managed.
Candles appear as the tree's growth hormones activate after winter dormancy, usually within a narrow window of two to four weeks depending on species and latitude. White pine candles can reach 6 to 12 inches in a single flush, while red pine typically produces 4 to 8 inches. The shoot is tender and vulnerable during this stage, consisting of needle primordia wrapped in bud scales that unfold as elongation proceeds.
By midsummer, the candle hardens, the needles fully extend and darken to mature color, and the shoot becomes inconspicuous. This transformation marks the end of the main growing season for that year's shoot. Some pines, particularly under stress or in southern ranges, may produce a second flush of candles later in the season, though this is weaker than the first.
Use in forestry practice
Foresters monitor candles as an indicator of tree vigor and growing conditions. Healthy, vigorous trees produce long, full candles; drought stress, frost damage, or pest pressure results in short, sparse, or absent candles. Damage to candles by late frost, deer browse, or insects like pine weevils can permanently degrade tree form, making candle assessment critical in young plantation management and seed orchard work.
The term appears in timber quality grading, species identification guides, and operational forestry notes. It is most commonly used when discussing two-needle and five-needle pine species in North America, though the phenomenon occurs in most temperate and boreal pines.
