A car-sleeper is a passenger train equipped with sleeping accommodation for travellers and with dedicated rail vehicles for transporting their motor cars. The train operates as a single unit, allowing passengers to travel overnight in comfort while their vehicles are secured in specially designed wagons coupled to the same consist. This service eliminates the need for long-distance driving and avoids the expense of commercial car transport.

The sleeping cars themselves are standard sleeper stock, typically offering berths arranged in compartments or open sections, with dining and lounge facilities. The car-carrying vehicles are flat wagons or enclosed double-deck carriers equipped with securing points, ramps, and restraint systems designed to hold motor vehicles safely during transit. These car wagons are positioned within the train formation, often toward the rear or middle sections, allowing independent loading and unloading without disturbing sleeping passengers.

Operational and Commercial Context

Car-sleeper services operate on established long-distance routes, typically overnight runs covering 300 to 700 miles. Passengers drive their cars onto the train at the departure depot, leave the vehicle with train staff, and proceed to their allocated sleeping berth. At the destination, cars are unloaded while passengers complete their journey. This model has been particularly common in European railways, where services have connected major cities and holiday regions.

The service requires substantial infrastructure: purpose-built terminals with loading ramps, vehicle handling equipment, secure parking compounds, and coordinated scheduling to integrate both passenger and freight car operations. Staffing includes guard personnel to supervise vehicle loading, sleeping car attendants, and depot workers. The complexity and relatively low capacity compared to dedicated freight services mean car-sleeper trains are economically sensitive to fuel prices, labour costs, and competition from budget airlines and improved road infrastructure.

The term reflects the dual nature of the service: the sleeper function emphasizes passenger comfort for overnight travel, while the car-carrying function distinguishes it from standard sleeper services. These trains occupied a niche market for leisure and business travel where the convenience of having one's own vehicle at the destination justified the premium over either driving solo or purchasing separate transport. Economic pressures have reduced the prevalence of car-sleeper services in recent decades, though some routes have persisted in specific markets.
