carbon black

A fine black powder of amorphous carbon manufactured by the incomplete combustion of natural gas or oil, and used as a pigment in the manufacture of ink and paint. Used as a filler in rubber and rubber-like polymers, it helps prevent deterioration by ultraviolet rays.

carbon black: soot engineered into industrial utility

Carbon black is a colloidal suspension of amorphous carbon particles, typically 10 to 500 nanometers in diameter, produced by partially combusting petroleum feedstock or natural gas in controlled furnaces. The process generates soot that is captured, processed, and graded by particle size and surface chemistry. Unlike wood charcoal or activated carbon, carbon black is a manufactured commodity with tightly specified properties, produced at scales of millions of tonnes annually.

The primary production method is the furnace process, where liquid feedstock is injected into a hot combustion chamber at temperatures around 1300 to 1600 degrees Celsius. Quenching with water halts the reaction and deposits carbon particles onto collector surfaces. Alternative routes include the thermal process (using natural gas at higher temperatures) and the channel process (now largely obsolete). Each route produces distinct particle morphologies and surface characteristics, influencing downstream performance.

Rubber reinforcement and UV protection

Carbon black's dominant use is as a reinforcing filler in tire manufacturing and other elastomer goods. A typical car tire contains 25 to 30 percent carbon black by weight. It increases tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and tear resistance while reducing rolling resistance and heat buildup. The mechanism relies on the formation of filler networks within the rubber matrix and the interaction between carbon particle surfaces and rubber chains. Surface area and structure (aggregate size and porosity) determine reinforcement efficacy; higher surface area grades yield stronger reinforcement but also increase viscosity during mixing.

The UV absorption property arises from the material's black color and light-absorbing capacity across the visible and near-infrared spectrum. In rubber compounds, carbon black acts as a protective barrier against ozone and ultraviolet degradation, extending service life in outdoor applications such as belts, hoses, and roofing membranes. This dual function as both reinforcer and protective additive makes it economically attractive.

Carbon black also functions as a pigment in printing inks, coatings, and plastics, where it provides opacity and color. Particle size and structure affect tinting strength and dispersion behavior. Specialist grades are engineered for specific applications: high-structure blacks for high-performance rubber, medium-structure for general purpose, and low-structure for pigmentation and coating applications.
