Chop and drop is the practice of cutting plants down to soil level and leaving the root system undisturbed in the ground. The severed plant material is then left on site, either scattered across the soil surface or incorporated into the top few inches as mulch. Unlike mowing, which removes biomass from the field, chop and drop returns organic matter directly to the soil where it grew.

The method relies on cutting tools ranging from machetes and sickles to brush cutters and walk-behind flail mowers, depending on vegetation density and scale. For woody shrubs and small trees, hand pruning saws or powered chainsaws cut material at or just below the soil surface. The key distinction from other vegetation removal techniques is that the root structure stays intact, whether that is the fibrous roots of an annual cover crop or the taproot of a perennial shrub.

Leaving roots in place preserves soil structure and mycorrhizal networks that would otherwise be disrupted by digging or tilling. The decaying root channels improve water infiltration and aeration in subsequent seasons. In perennial systems like orchards or vineyards, this approach avoids the cost and disturbance of stump removal. For annual crops grown as green manure, the decomposing roots add nitrogen and organic carbon to the soil profile.

Chop and drop is common in agroforestry, permaculture, and regenerative agriculture systems where biomass cycling takes priority over rapid cleanup. Coffee farmers use it to manage shade trees and nitrogen-fixing legumes between rows. Smallholders in tropical regions apply it to control weeds while building soil fertility. The cut material decomposes over weeks to months depending on moisture, temperature, and carbon to nitrogen ratio.

Drawbacks include delayed field access if material is bulky, potential pest habitat if the cut vegetation is not decomposed quickly, and incomplete weed control if cutting is shallow or repeated growth is vigorous. In wet climates, heavy residue cover can create anaerobic pockets. The method works best when plant material is tender enough to break down within a season and when regrowth from remaining roots is either desired or manageable.
