An outfield is cultivated arable land, typically at the margin of a farm's productive core, that is cropped repeatedly without the application of manure or fertilizer. It represents the extension of tillage beyond the intensively managed infield, where fertility is actively maintained through livestock waste, compost, or other amendments. The outfield occupies a middle ground between the homestead's richest soil and unclaimed common land or waste ground.
The outfield system was most common in northern European farming, particularly in Scotland and Scandinavia, where it formed part of a deliberate three-zone land management strategy. The infield received all available manure and supported continuous cropping of cereals, legumes, or root crops. The outfield lay beyond this inner circle and was cropped for several years in succession until soil fertility dropped sharply, after which it was left fallow or allowed to revert to rough grazing for a period of years before being broken in again. Common land and moorland formed the outer boundary.
Outfield soils deteriorate visibly over their cropping cycle. Yields of barley or oats decline markedly after three to five years of continuous cultivation. Nitrogen becomes depleted first; phosphorus and potassium follow more slowly. Structural breakdown, weed pressure, and pest accumulation accelerate the decline. The timing of the fallow period and its length depended on local soil type, rainfall, and the pressure to maximize production. In marginal climates and poor soils, rotations might be as short as two cropping years followed by five or more years of rest.
Outfield and commons management
The outfield system was economical because it exploited land that was too poor or remote to merit intensive manuring, yet still productive enough to justify the labor of tillage and harvest. As farms grew and population increased, pressure on outfield land intensified. The boundary between outfield and common land became contested, and many outfields were eventually enclosed, brought under improved rotation systems, or abandoned altogether as industrial farming and chemical fertilizers made the distinction obsolete.
The term reflects a clear spatial hierarchy: the field nearest the house and fold was the inner, best-nourished ground; the outfield was literally further out. Modern intensive agriculture has eliminated the practice, but the word persists in historical land records and in the place names of old farmsteads where the three-zone system is still visible in the field pattern.
