rootstock: the underground partner in every graft
A rootstock is a rooted plant, usually a seedling or cutting, that serves as the lower component of a grafted tree. Its job is straightforward: anchor the tree, feed it, and keep it healthy. The scion, grafted onto this rootstock, is what actually produces the fruit or flowers you want. In commercial orchards, rootstocks are chosen not for what they grow, but for what they enable in the scion above them.
Rootstock selection determines much of what happens in an orchard. Different rootstocks confer different traits to the grafted tree: dwarfing, disease resistance, cold hardiness, or soil tolerance. A standard apple seedling rootstock produces a full-size tree reaching 25 feet or more; M.26 dwarfing rootstock keeps the same apple variety to 8 to 10 feet. Pear rootstocks like Quince A or OHxF series alter vigor and influence compatibility with the scion variety. The rootstock's vigor and disease resistance are inherited by the grafted tree; the flavor and appearance of the fruit come from the scion.
Practical sources and compatibility
Rootstocks are propagated in nurseries from seeds, cuttings, or layering. Apple and pear rootstocks are often raised from dormant hardwood cuttings in winter, while stone fruit rootstocks like Prunus mahaleb for cherries come from seed. Compatibility is essential: a pear scion will not graft successfully onto an apple rootstock. Even within a species, some combinations fail to form a strong union or later develop graft incompatibility, causing the tree to weaken or break at the graft line years after planting.
In the field, rootstock performance depends on soil conditions and climate. A rootstock bred for well-drained loam may struggle in waterlogged clay. Winter hardiness of the rootstock matters as much as the scion in cold regions; a tender rootstock will kill the entire tree if the union freezes. Some rootstocks are susceptible to specific pests or pathogens; others resist them. Orchard managers choose rootstocks for a given site based on expected performance under local conditions, not just on the scion variety they plan to grow.
The term rootstock itself reflects its function: it is stock, meaning breeding material or source plant, and its value lies below ground, in the roots. In nursery catalogs and orchard management, rootstock designation is as specific as scion variety. An apple tree is not simply "Gala"; it is "Gala on M.7" or "Gala on MM.111", with the rootstock code telling the grower exactly what kind of root system and vigor to expect.
