A concretion is a hard, typically rounded or lumpy mass of mineral material that forms within softer sedimentary rock or unconsolidated sediment. It grows when mineral-rich groundwater percolates through porous layers, depositing silica, calcite, iron oxide, or other compounds around a nucleus (often a fossil shell, bone, or grain of sand). The cementing mineral binds loose particles into a solid mass that is denser and more resistant to weathering than the surrounding matrix.
Concretions vary widely in size, from pea-sized nodules to boulders weighing several tonnes. Flint and chert concretions, composed of cryptocrystalline silica, are common in chalk and limestone formations. Ironstone concretions, rich in iron oxides and hydroxides, occur in shales and mudstones. Siderite concretions appear in coal seams. Phosphate concretions are economically important in some sedimentary phosphate deposits used for fertilizer production. Pyrite nodules, less common, can form toxic acid mine drainage if exposed during extraction.
Extraction and Processing Impact
During mining and quarrying, concretions present a practical problem. They are harder than the host rock and resist fragmentation by blasting or crushing, often requiring selective hand-picking or secondary grinding. In coal mining, ironstone concretions must be screened out to prevent damage to downstream processing equipment and contamination of the product. In clay and shale extraction for brick and tile production, they can jam feeders and reduce kiln efficiency if not removed beforehand.
The term concretion comes from Latin concretio, meaning a growing together. It is distinct from a nodule, which is larger and forms by replacement of the host rock rather than simple cementation. In paleontology, concretions are prized because they preserve fossils exceptionally well, protecting them from chemical decay and mechanical damage during burial and exhumation. Mining operations in sedimentary basins routinely encounter them and must account for their removal in mine planning and processing flow sheets.
