A trackhoe is an excavator mounted on continuous caterpillar tracks rather than wheels or legs. The tracks distribute the machine's weight over a larger ground area, allowing it to operate on soft, unstable, or uneven terrain where a wheeled machine would sink or slip. The term combines "track" and "hoe", the latter referring to the digging bucket or boom assembly. Trackhoes range from compact machines weighing 2 to 3 tonnes, used for utility work and landscaping, to massive models exceeding 60 tonnes deployed in quarries, mines, and heavy excavation.
The caterpillar undercarriage is the defining feature. Each track consists of a series of metal or rubber-bushed pins connecting steel or composite pads. The tracks wrap around sprockets and idler wheels, powered by hydraulic drive motors. This design gives trackhoes excellent traction on slopes up to 35 degrees and allows them to cross soft ground, mud, and rubble without bogging down. The width and depth of the pad determine ground contact pressure; a 20-tonne trackhoe may exert pressures between 0.3 and 0.6 bar depending on track configuration.
Common variants and job roles
Trackhoes are fitted with different buckets and attachments depending on the task. A standard digging bucket has a capacity of 0.5 to 2.5 cubic metres. Specialized attachments include grapples for handling stone or waste, thumbs for material sorting, breakers for rock breaking, and shears for cutting rebar or scrap metal. The boom length and reach typically range from 4 to 8 metres on compact machines to 15 metres on large models, determining how far from the body the bucket can operate. Track width is adjustable on many models to fit narrow work sites or to reduce ground pressure for sensitive areas.
Trackhoes commonly fail when tracks become caked with sticky material, reducing traction and overheating the drive motor. Hard ground or rubble can fracture pads or bend sprocket teeth. The hydraulic cylinders controlling the arm are prone to leakage and corrosion in wet or saline environments. Operators must monitor ground stability; even with excellent traction, a trackhoe can overturn if the ground suddenly collapses or if the operator swings the boom too aggressively to one side while moving uphill.
In mining and quarrying, trackhoes dominate small to medium-scale operations and are often the first machine deployed to extract overburden or loosen ore. They excel at spot digging, material sorting, and sequential bucket loading of haul trucks. In urban demolition and utility work, their low ground pressure and compact footprint make them preferable to larger lattice-boom machines. Rental yards stock trackhoes extensively because the machines are durable, easy to transport on trailers, and adaptable to many site conditions where fixed infrastructure is absent.
