headframe: steel tower that hauls ore from underground

A headframe is the vertical steel structure erected directly above a mineshaft opening. It supports the hoist machinery, guide rails, and pulley system that lowers miners and equipment into the mine and raises extracted ore to the surface. The headframe is typically 40 to 80 feet tall, though deep shafts may require much taller structures. It is the first thing you see at any underground metal or hard rock mine.

The headframe must anchor a heavy-duty rope hoist, usually electric-driven, with a drum capacity of several tons. The hoist cable runs over a large sheave wheel mounted at the top of the frame and descends into the shaft. Guide rails attached to the frame keep the cage or skip (the conveyance carrying ore or personnel) centered as it travels vertically. The frame itself is built from steel members, often lattice or box section, bolted or welded together to withstand the shock loads and vibration from repeated hoisting cycles.

Headframes come in two main forms: the standing headframe, which is permanently installed and remains in place for the life of the mine, and the portable headframe, which can be disassembled and moved between shafts in large mines. The standing type is more common and is built to last decades. Both designs must be engineered to handle wind loads, seismic activity in certain regions, and the dynamic stress of the hoist mechanism itself.

Common problems and maintenance

Corrosion is the primary enemy of headframes in wet climates; many are painted or galvanized to extend their life. Metal fatigue can develop in the support members over time from thousands of hoist cycles, particularly around welded joints. Rope wear and sheave groove erosion are ongoing maintenance issues. A collapsed or weakened headframe is a catastrophic safety failure that can trap personnel underground and halt all mine operations.

The term headframe comes from its position at the head of the shaft. It has been standard mining vocabulary for over a century and is closely related to terms like gallows frame and pit head gear used in coal mining regions. The headframe is a visible symbol of underground mining infrastructure and appears on mine site maps and in mining regulations governing structural integrity and inspection schedules.
