cope

A covering piece on top of a wall exposed to the weather, usually made of metal, masonry, or stone, and sloped to carry off water.

A cope is the finished top course of a wall, designed to shed water and protect the masonry below from rain penetration. It sits exposed to weather on both sides, so it must be shaped and angled to direct water away from the wall face and prevent it from running down between the masonry units. Without a proper cope, water soaks into the top of the wall, causing freeze-thaw damage, efflorescence, and structural decay over time.

Copes are typically sloped at 45 degrees or steeper, and often have a drip edge or offset on the underside to break the water stream away from the wall face. Stone copes may be limestone, granite, or slate, cut with a single slope or a more complex crown profile. Brick copes use specially shaped bricks or tiles laid at an angle. Metal copes, usually aluminum or stainless steel, offer long life and can be fabricated to any slope or profile.

Common failures and variations

A poorly installed cope allows water to run down the inner face, a problem called weeping. This happens when the slope is too shallow, the drip edge is missing, or caulking joints have failed. In cavity walls, water that enters at the cope can bypass the cavity itself and wet the inner leaf. Some designs use a saddle cope, which has a ridge running along the centerline rather than a simple slope; this is common on wider walls but costs more to install and creates a maintenance point where water can collect.

The term cope originates from Old English and earlier Germanic roots meaning to cover or to bow over. In masonry, it literally covers the top of the wall. Copes differ from flashing, which is thin sheet material inserted between courses to channel water outward; a cope is a complete structural element that forms the topmost course itself. They are essential on parapets, gable walls, and any wall that terminates at its full height rather than under a roof.
